Chairs
Celebrating six new chairs and the work they support
Six chairs created as part of the Campaign for UC Santa Cruz were celebrated at spring investitures for their inaugural appointees. Donors established each of the chairs to further work in fields from the Natural Reserves to the physics of information. Four of the chairs received matching funds from the UC Office of the President. The newest chair, created by the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation, will fund research and teaching in feminist studies and provide support for graduate fellowships.

The chairs and their holders:

In October, a special Convocation of Chairs during Founders Weekend will be held to celebrate all current chair holders. During the Campaign for UC Santa Cruz, 16 new chairs have been created.
Alumna funds no-till farming research at CASFS
Roberta Gordon portraitAlumna Roberta Gordon’s deep interest in climate change and sustainable farming practices has led her to back to UC Santa Cruz and the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. After graduating in ’81 from Rachel Carson College (formerly College 8) with degrees in Chemistry and Environmental Studies, she went on to Yale for her law degree. She has pursued environmental justice since, personally through her advocacy and professionally through her environmental law practice and in work for the EPA. The Ida and Robert Gordon Family Foundation, which she leads, is funding a  CASFS research project exploring no-till organic agricultural practices and their potential to reduce release of greenhouse gases and lower costs for farmers.
Night lights: Rugby team illuminated
Rugby team practicing at nightFor the first time in the nearly five-decade history of the UC Santa Cruz rugby team, a full set of stadium lights illuminate the Lower East Field allowing players to train together during the dark winter season hours. The lights were turned on thanks to a gift of $190,000 from rugby alumnus George Kraw (’71), who played on the first rugby team in 1967—the same team that is credited with being the first to adopt the venerated Banana Slug as its mascot.
In planned gift, one teacher honors another
Classroom experimentBy establishing a planned gift, Michael Moore is honoring the UC Santa Cruz professor who inspired him to become a chemistry teacher. The teacher: Frank Andrews.   Morgan has been a high school science teacher for nearly three decades—one of many Andrews students who chose the profession. The chair Moore and his wife are establishing in Andrews’ name will support a professor in developing or adapting new methods for teaching science. Hear Andrews and Moore discuss the gift.
